Age spots are flat, brown spots on sun-exposed skin.  Some people call them freckles, but freckles are cute.  Age spots are far from cute.  They are also called sun spots or liver spots.  Now how can a liver spot be cute?  But there is hope for those of us who have age spots.  Stay tuned.

Age spots can appear on different parts of the body.  There are age spots on the face and age spots can also appear on the hands.  As I get older, I see more and more age spots on my hands because my hands are constantly exposed to the sun.  When applying sunscreen, we often concentrate more on our faces and less on our hands.  Then one day we look down and there are those ugly brown age spots on our hands, making them look older than they actually are.

Age spot treatment means age spot removal.  We all want to know how to remove age or at least minimize their appearance on face and hands.  There are many over the counter treatments and some people swear by them.  It is certainly less invasive than age spot treatments such as laser treatments.

Over the Counter

One over the counter age spot treatment that has been around for years is Porcelana.  As far as actually removing the age spot, it may not.  It is a treatment, not a removal of age spots.  I have never tried Porcelana, but those who have feel it does minimize the age spots.

Oil of Olay is a tried and true brand that many women swear by.  It costs more than Porcelana, but it may be a better treatment for age spots.  Oil of Olay has many lines to meet  the individual needs of every woman.  Olay Pro-X has been designed for the treatment of age spots.

Clinique Dark Spot Corrector is supposedly a top of the line product that works fairly quickly in removing age spots.  Another one of the Clinique products is Even Better Clinical which says you will see results in four weeks and after twelve weeks you will see a visible reduction.

These products are not cheap.  A one ounce bottle is $49.50.  Compare this to Porcelana.  P is much cheaper, but it may not be as effective.  After reading the reviews, I found many of them very positive.  There were some that said it had no affect on their age spots.

There are many age spot removers advertised and they come at a very high price.  Oftentimes these products come with a money back guarantee.  That’s a good thing especially when a products costs $99.

There are some homeopathic products that boast the ability to remove age spots when actually most of them treat the age spots by minimizing them.  It may also take weeks if not months for these products to work.

Some products come from other countries.  For some reason, we find the idea of an international product appealing when they probably don’t work much better than any other product.

There are tons of age spot removers to go around because we all want to know how to get rid of age spots.  If age spots are no big deal, then you might want to go the over the counter route starting with a cheaper age spot remover.  If it doesn’t work, then you won’t be out a lot of money.

Laser Treatments

If age spots are a big deal and you want to skip the big price tag of  the over the counter treatments and you want to be assured the age spots will be removed, then your best bet is cosmetic laser treatments.  Cosmetic laser treatments are safe and very little if any discomfort is experienced.  The age spots will usually be gone in about three days.

It is important to maintain a skincare regime  to keep the age spots from returning.  Some people may need some follow up treatment to keep age spots away forever.

Another type of treatment for age spots is intense pulse light technology.  This modern technology is great for age spot removal along with other skin problems.  The number of age spots will determine how many treatments will be needed.

There are many age spot treatments offered over the counter and from doctors.  Before trying a treatment it is always important to get as much information as possible.  It is especially true if you plan to use laser or IPL for age spot removal.  Find out what the risks are and what results you can expect from either one of these treatments.

Cover-Ups

The last age spot treatment is actually covering up the age spot(s).  This is probably the cheapest of all the treatments.  This age spot treatment is for those who don’t have a lot of money to spend on this cosmetic problem.  Some cover ups are quite effective and may be just enough for those who are not interested in making a big investment of money.

Mineral make up concealers for age spot treatments are excellent cover ups.  The trick is to color the age spot so that it matches your natural skin color.  By applying a red-based concealer under a yellow based one, age spots can virtually disappear into the natural skin tone.  Problem solved and with little or no fuss.

Age spot removal may not be high on your priority list, but age spots can be one of life’s little stresses that you don’t have to live with.  Whether you decide to use an over the counter treatment, laser or IPL, or just go with a cover up, an age spot shouldn’t be something that keeps you awake at night.

The Best Treatment is Prevention

The best treatment for age spots is prevention.  Don’t get too much sun and apply sunscreen when you know you will be outdoors for a long time.  Take good care of your skin and age spots may not be a problem or at most not as big a problem.

The old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is quite true when it comes to skin care and age spots.
