Mind machines have never been exactly cheap. Many of the advanced machines on the market – the Photosonix Nova Pro 100, David PAL, etc – cost around $500, putting them out of reach for most people who would like to experiment with them for personal exploration and entertainment.

Luckily there are a handful of economically priced models on the market. Their are two I will specifically look at in this article and they are the Sirius and Proteus Sound and Light Machines.

Sirius
The Sirius looks more or less like a portable cassette player and weighs about the same. It comes with 20 different programs and a cute little booklet that describes each of them, sometimes using rather wishy-washy language that makes me laugh. (You’ll see what I mean if you buy one.) It comes with a pair of white light LED glasses and from personal experience I call tell you that the visuals are simply stunning with this device. The light and sound portions are adjustable and you can turn them up and down live during a sessions with any interference.

Also note that the final program, session 20, is a cool random session that lasts forever and is never the same each time you run it.

Proteus
The Proteus looks just like the Sirius with a slight change in colors. What’s different is what’s on the inside. You can more than twice as many programs – 50 in all, in fact. What’s more if you get the ability to add 200 more programs on the device! You can either download them and install or create them yourself using the included free software and them install them. If that sounds awesome to you you will find me in agreement! It connects to computers using the old fashioned RS-232 cable, so be sure you’re laptop still has one of those connections before buying.

I’ve yet to find a thorough review of the Proteus so you’ll have to go on just knowing the basic features to make a decision here.

If You’ve Got the Time and Patience: Find Them Used

The first mind machine I ever bought was used off Ebay. It was from an estate sale and the seller had no idea about using it, and sold it to me for a good price. Unfortunately the LED portion of it didn’t last more than a year or two but the audio part is still going strong.

Thus is the risk you take when buying used. Also note that some prominent vendors actually sell used equipment alongside new equipment and you can get some really expensive quality hardware for a good price if you act quick.

The only problem (other than possibly faulty equipment) when getting used hardware is that it can take a lot of time to make it worth your while. Considering the low cost of the entry level Sirius, you have to ask yourself if it’s really worth a couple bucks to spend the time necessary hunting down a used item in such a small market of buyers and sellers.

The Future

I predict someone will begin making much cheaper units that dramatically undercut the cheapest models out there right now. I say this because the cost of hardware, distribution, marketing – everything basically – has gone now with the proliferation of the internet and the general advances of technology. Yet at the same time, the cheapest mind machine of today (the Sirius) cost $30 more now in 2011 than it did in 2005. The market is ripe for a rumble and I hope somewhere along the line a cheaper machine with an interface to the internet pops up and changes everything.

After moving into a larger home, I had an extra family room that needed to be furnished. Even though being reversible can win some time, the Bislev rug still has to be cleaned and this is also possible without ruining the item. It is made of pure cotton, which is an advantage in my opinion since I don’t like synthetic materials, and can be handwashed and hung out to dry.

The colors did not bleed the first time I did this and even though it has been cleaned a few times already the colors are still vibrant, so it is a rug that will be used for a long time.

Overall, this is a great area rug. However, it is not perfect and the one problem that I have noticed is that the underside does not grip the floor which causes it to easily slip or move from place.

This could be solved by just putting a table on it, or just placing an anti-slip mat underneath it. I chose to do the latter and since then it has been fine.
