Our youth is not eternal. This is the reason why many of our organ functions deteriorate over time. It is not our wish to have malfunctioning body parts however, because of wear and tear, it should be expected when we get old.

Among the most common part of the body that begins to lose its functions as we get older are our eyes. Having our sense of sight is God’s gift. It enables us to appreciate the physical world around us. When we lose our sense of sight, we lose a lot. We lose seeing our loved ones, the beauty of nature, and the world.

When our sight begins to blur and we no longer could read the words on our favorite book. It is time to get glasses. Yes, some people would really hesitate on purchasing reading glasses because they say that wearing glasses make look old. In the past the stigma that comes with wearing glasses is that it signifies their eyes are starting to fail. However, over the years fashion had begun to include eye glasses, and the stigma that you have failing eyes have been replaced by the idea that glasses make you look smart or intelligent. Actually in television nowadays, news anchors usually wear eyeglasses and they do look smarter.

If your eyes are already impaired don’t hesitate to purchase reading glasses. It is advised that you consult the ophthalmologist to diagnose what your actual eye ailment is, however some people who think that they don’t have any serious eye problem would opt to purchase non prescription eye glasses.

Non prescription eyeglasses magnifying capacity is measured in diopters. This pertains to the power of the lenses. It is rated from +1.0 which is the weakest, to +3.5 diopters which is the strongest. To know which lens is appropriate for your eye sight, it is advised to try on different lenses with different grades and read with them. You must be about 12 inches from the reading material. Try to look for the one that makes you actually see the fine print without holding the reading material close or far from you.

Once you have found the right fit. You can now move on to choosing the kind of the lens you want. There are frames. Reading glasses frames come in different styles and colors. The first thing you have to look at is the material of the frame. Generally the materials used in making frames are plastic and metal. Metal options can include poly carbonate material, stainless steel, and titanium. When choosing frames, the wearer of the eye glass is taken into consideration. If the eyeglass is going to be worn by a child, it is better to choose frames that are made from hypoallergenic materials, and frames that are flexible and not easily broken.

The problem with non prescription glasses is that it can actually damage your eyesight in the long run. It is because the lenses are generic and the grade of the lens does not match your eyes’ needs. This causes eyestrain and could result to more problems in the future.  For short term usage, non prescription reading glasses are okay but for long term use make sure you visit the doctor and have a custom made glasses for you.
