A broken laptop can be a nuisance, but it does not necessarily mean you have to buy an entire new machine. Fixing the laptop yourself is fairly easy and can be done with the proper set of tools. Unlike a PC desktop, you cannot interchange pieces from one notebook to another. Each model has its specific pieces and codes, so they are very difficult to interchange. If you need to use another computer while fixing your laptop, there are plenty of laptops under 400 dollars that will do most common computer tasks.
Diagnose the Problem
Start by trying to find out the problem with your laptop before beginning a repair. There are some hardware sections that are prone to causing problems, so these should be the first places where you look. These areas include the hard drive, memory, power source, video card, or screen.
Memory
Laptop RAM is very sensitive, so it may start causing problems for the entire computer if it is not function correctly. To test the RAM settings, see if your computer can start up. A blue screen or freezing may be an indication of a malfunctioning RAM module that needs to be replaced. Many notebooks only work with one type of RAM, so check the instructions to see if you need a certain brand or MHz speed. If you have a similar model around, try replacing it to see if it solves your problem.
Hard Drive
A laptop will still turn on if it has a hard drive problem, but it may not be able to load its operating system. There may also be freezes and lost data if the hard drive is corrupted. Drives are fairly easy to replace on a laptop because they do not need to be a certain brand or speed. Most of them can be replaced by opening a hatch on the underside of the notebook. You may need screwdriver for this task.
Power Source
If your laptop is having a power source issue, it will not turn on at all. However, some problematic power sources alternate turning on or off. An unstable power box is very dangerous, so you should disconnect it as soon as possible. A fluctuating power source can destroy your motherboard, CPU, and any other device it is connected to.
Video Card
Unlike many gaming and high performance PC, most laptop video cards are integrated with the motherboard. This makes them irreplaceable, unless you have a newer gaming laptop with a secondary video card. A graphics card problem may mean that you will have to replace the entire mainboard. However, some repair shops may be able to install a new card for you by welding it onto the motherboard.
Screen
A laptop screen is fairly fragile, so it can quickly become broken when exposed to heavy pressure or weight. Most manufacturers have screen replacements, so you may want to check if your product is still under warranty. Replacing a screen is not recommended for amateurs and should only be done by a trained repair professional.
