When my mother passed away, I inherited from her a nice room rug which I placed in our bonus room which is also where my home office is.

After a few months, I noticed a tear developing at the edge of the carpet just under my desk. I knew it was time to begin my search for office chair mats.

Now I’m a spendthrift and I have to say that I wasn’t found of spending $50 or so on a chair mat. And that’s what I was finding as I looked around some of the office supply stores. And I wasn’t finding any selection at all at big department stores.

Then I made one of my regular trips to Costco and ventured down the office supply aisle and found the ES Robbins Heavy Duty Chair Mat for $21.

Must be made in China huh?

Actually, it’s made in the USA. That was another plus for me.

(See some more pictures of my mat and how I’m using at the bottom this post)

Here are some of the spec details:

  • The mat is 45 by 53 inches.
  • As do most desk and computer chair mats, the bottom has anchor points to grip the carpet and keep the mat from sliding around.
  • There are “carry handles” to make it easier to carry the mat but you can cut them off with scissors if you want to.
  • It’s extra thick, not some little plastic chair mat that would tear easily. In fact, this mat is guaranteed for life not to crack or it will be replaced. That’s of course under normal use. You do need to tear off the sticker on the mat and keep it as your warranty. There are additional details at the manufacturers website: www. esrchairmats.com/ I don’t think China-made would give that kind of guarantee.
  • This chair mat for carpeted floors is for use on carpets up to three-fourths an inch including the carpet padding. Honestly, I’m not sure what mine is, and I have a rug on top of carpet. But it seems to working fine on my carpet and the chair I’m using. As far as rolling back up on the mat after going off, I’m sure it depends some on the thickness of the carpet and even the weight of the person in the chair. As for my chair, there is a slight bump and extra push needed to get the chair back up on the mat. The mat does have a crystal edge for “easy rolling on and off.” Again, your mileage may vary. Really there are variety of chair mats you can buy depending on your needs from chair mats for plush carpet or even a chair mat for a hardwood floor.

One thing I did not think to do before buying my chair mat, was to check out the offerings on Amazon. If nothing else, Amazon is a great tool for learning what to look for, and get additional reviews from actual buyers of the products. Below are some examples you might wish to check out:
