Traditionally the word wedding cake brings to mind a multi-layered confection of mouthwatering icing over an equally delicious cake, in other words a tiered cake. This is not to be confused with tiered wedding cake stands.
A tiered cake is just that, a series of cake layers that are set, one a top the other, with the largest on the bottom and the smallest on the top. There may be two tiers or there may be five tiers, the choice is up to the bride and groom.
However, a tiered wedding cake stand is a stand, or series of stands, each with a layer of the cake, that are arranged at various heights. They may be arranged in a cascading configuration resembling a curving stair, or they may be arranged in a seemingly random pattern with short and tall interspersed creating a less structured display.
Tiered cake stands may be made of silver or brass, or of plastic or clear acrylic. Some look like gothic columns and others like pedestals, while still others are made so that the cake sits on a flat tray with decorative scrolling and curling brackets at four points along the sides to actually create an interlocking support system for another layer to be placed on top.
The beauty of these cake stands is not only in the actual appearance, although they can be quite lovely, but in the functionality of the form. They allow for cake layers that are all the same size to be displayed elegantly, and allow for easy access to them for the cake cutting festivities and serving. Another plus to these wedding cake stands is that each cake can be a different kind of cake and icing, perfect for that couple who just can’t make up their mind and pick just one kind of cake. These stands also make it easy to have each layer be a different shape and color.
The choices of wedding cake stands may seem simple at first, but once you start looking you will realize that they are anything but! Just remember that this is your day and you can have the cake you want, any way you want, and eat it too.
