My Remington shaver finally gave out. At least, the motor was running and stopping and starting again. I could have oiled it and maybe gotten a little more use out of it, but since it was several years old and I had never purchased new blades for it, I figured it was time to get a new one.

I dropped by Costco first, but they only had one shaver and it was over $100 dollars. So Wal-Mart was the next stop. They had a variety of men’s shavers in a wide price range. I just can’t bring myself to pay nearly $200 for a shaver, so I settled for another Remington priced right at $35.

The model I got was the Remington R4 with titanium coated blades. Here are some of the features and my take on some of them.

  • It has three floating heads, same as the last one I owned. I like these much better than the shavers with screens. I had one of those and the screens were easy to tear, even when installing them. And they aren’t cheap.
  • It has titanium coated blades. Not sure what my other shaver had, but we will see how long these blades last and continue with a new shaver type of shave.
  • It is a rechargeable razor and can be used without the cord. That’s fine, but I actually liked my other shaver better because I could live it plugged in and use it right there at the mirror where it is plugged in. This new shaver won’t work unless it is unattached from the cord. The box says that the charge (16 hrs) will last for 30 minutes for 10 days of shaving. No major deal breaker, but again I liked the other better.
  • One thing I do like better about this shaver is that it’s easier to clean. The head pops open and you just wash it under the facet. With the other shaver you had to take the head completely off. Just that little bit of extra trouble caused me to “forget” to clean it for long periods of time until it got jammed up and I could tell it wasn’t cutting very well.

Ok, so the most important thing is the verdict on how it shaves. Of course, it’s brand new with blades as shape as they will ever be. So yes, it does give a good overall close shave. The box says it “features pivot & flex technology.” Don’t you just love it when they use that word “technology?” You just know it’s got to be good. Well, maybe yes, maybe no.

I’ll have to say that I’ve never had an electric razor that shaved up under my nose or on my neck as close I would like. I often wind up having to use shave cream and a blade to get the rest. The razor I bought does say that it will cut close, even on the neck. Depends on how you define “close.” For me, it’s close but not close enough. Maybe one of those $200 razors would do the trick, but I’m just not willing to pay that much.

Overall, it’s a good razor for the price and I’m pleased with the purchase.

Below are some additional pictures, including what came with my shave in the box and the proverbial before and after shots.
