But what makes one perfume more expensive than the next? Why can one brand be $50 per bottle and another $500 per bottle on average. Or, why can one variety of a certain brand be much more expensive than other fragrances from that same perfume house?
One reason that some perfumes are more expensive than others is simply a marketing ploy. You can build two cars with the exact same parts in the exact same place and put a luxury decal on one and a mid-class decal on another and the two cars will sell for drastically different prices.
Sometimes you are paying for the name on the outside of the bottle rather than for what is in the bottle.
A second reason might be the actual ingredients. For example, many fragrances have woodsy smells to them. Some of those fragrances get that smell from cedar or other less expensive woods while some get the smell from something like agarwood which comes from Aquilaria trees which are a potentially threatened species of fauna.
The more rare the ingredients, the more expensive the perfume will be. For example, many DKNY fragrances are quite affordable, but the DKNY perfume Chaos is quite expensive and one of the reasons for the expense is the use of agarwood.
However, Chaos is also expensive because it is discontinued. Discontinued perfumes can get very expensive because of the laws of supply and demand. If people still want a product that there is not very much supply of, then the price will go up accordingly. Chaos can sell for as much as $1,600 per bottle.
